A preview of our activities – 

2016 

1.     WORKSHOP BY Dr JANAKI RANGARAJAN

 

Held On           :           January 23th, 2016

BHAWA conducted a dance workshop by  Dr Janaki Rangarajan The workshop held for Senior students and a Kauthuvam was taught to them.

 

2.     NATYANJALI 2016 

BHAWA started 2016 in a grand way with its fourth edition of Natyanjali on January 22nd, 2016 at Emirates Theatre. The theme was Sankalpam and it was presided by renowned artiste Dr. Janaki Rangarajan.

 

2015

 

1.     BHAWA YOUTH FESTIVAL

The beginning of Margazhi month heralds an atmosphere of Music and Dance. It was BHAWA's privilege to start off the season of performing arts in Dubai with bhawa's Youth Festival 2015 ! The festival was started with the sole aim of motivating young budding artistes to give a solo performance. The participants were honored with the title "BHAWA YUVA SRESHTA"

 

2.     COMPOSERS' DAY 2015

Held On           :           June 19, 2015 

BHAWA held its third edition of COMPOSERS' DAY - 2015 on June 19th 2015 at the Indian Consulate, Dubai. Bharatanatyam recitals based on the compositions of Sri Gopalakrishna Bharathi's magnum opus "Nandanar Charithram" were showcased.

 

3.     NATYANJALI 2015

 

BHAWA held its third edition of Natyanjali successfully on January 30th, 2015 at GEMS Wellington International school. The theme was Natya Sankhya and it was presided by renowned artiste Kalaimamani Smt Urmila Sathyanarayanan.

 

2014

 

1.     COMPOSERS' DAY 2014

Held On           :           June 13, 2014 

BHAWA held its second edition of Composer's Day. The event was dedicated to the compositions of Sri Oothukkadu Venkata Kavi and Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi. The event was presided by Sri Hariharan Sambamurthy, Great Grand son of Sri Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi.

 

2.     WORKSHOP BY SRI MADURAI R MURALIDARAN

 

Held On           :           January 18th, 2014 

BHAWA conducted a dance workshop by Sri Madurai Shri R.Muralidaran. The workshop held for Senior students and a Kauthuvam was taught to them.

We also held a workshop for junior students by Smt Anjana Ketty.

 

3.      NATYANJALI 2014

 

BHAWA held its second edition of Natyanjali successfully on January 17th, 2014 at GEMS Modern Academy Auditorium. The theme being : Sthalapuranam, it was presided by renowned artiste Sri Madurai Shri R.Muralidaran and Smt Anjana Ketty as the Guest of Honour.

 

2013

 

1.      LECTURE DEMONSTRATION BY SMT.SREKALA BHARATH

 

Held On           :           Sept 21st, 2013 

BHAWA conducted an interactive session by Smt.Srekala Bharath. The session was attended by senior and junior students and dance teachers. Smt.Srekala Bharath gladly answered various queries and enlightened us with her deep insight and knowledge of the art.

  

2.                         COMPOSER'S DAY

 

Held On           :           June 19, 2013 

BHAWA held a dance event for junior students called Composer's Day. The event was dedicated to the various compositions of Sri Papanasam Sivan. Many teams from Dubai took part in the event which was presided by Smt.Raadhika Anand.

 

 

3.  WORKSHOP BY SMT.SHOBANA BHALCHANDRA

 

Held On           :           Apr 4th - 5th, 2013 

BHAWA conducted a dance workshop by Smt.Shobana Bhalchandra. The workshop held for Senior students was on the topic : 'Introduction to Nattuvangam, Thalam & CHoreography'.

We also held a workshop for junior students on the topic  : 'Invocatory Item'. The workshop proved to be very beneficial for all the students.

  

4. NATYANJALI 2013

 

Held On           :           Jan 18, 2013 

BHAWA along with ATLAS STAR MEDICAL CENTRE proudly premiered NATYANJALI for the first time in the Middle East. The event staged 10 lead choreographers, 10 concepts and 70 Artists perform different classical dance forms of India like Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam, Kathak, and Odissi and Keralanadanam. NATYANJALI was declared open by Smt. Priyadarshini Govind, Director of Kalakshetra. It was a 5-hour long festival. The artistes were from different emirates in the UAE and it showcased the greatness of different forms of Indian classical dance with authenticity and richness.

 

2008 - 2013

 

1."KALAANKITAM" - ABHAI FIRST ANNUAL DAY CELEBRATIONS

 

Held On           :           June 18, 2010

Venue              :           SINDHI CEREMONIAL HALL, DUBAI 

All our workshops over the year were combined and staged as a mega show, "Kalaankitam" - ABHAI-Dubai's debut annual day celebrations.  All the students who participated in the workshops were trained in their respective items by the respective teachers and all the items were staged at the Annual Day Celebrations. The Chief Guest of the function was honourable Sri.K.Kumar, Convenor, ICWC.  His presence was immensely supportive and encouraging for our activities.  All children were given participation gifts and certificates.

 

ABHAI-Dubai reinvents itself as BHAWA-Dubai.  Vision and mission remain the same.

 

2. SUB-JUNIORS WORKSHOP by  Miss. THANGAMMAL SUBRAMANIAM

 

Held On           :           May , 2010 

In the same time frame, due to the huge response, we conducted another workshop for the tiny tots between the ages of 5 and 8 years.  A small padam on Krishna, "Theeradha Vilayattu Pillai" was taught in a story format to them.  It was hugely appreciated and enjoyed by the participants and the audience.  This workshop was taken by Miss. Thangammal Subramaniam, disciple of Smt. Meera Srikanth.

 

3. SUB-JUNIORS WORKSHOP by  Smt. BHUVANESHWARI RATHNAM

 

Held On           :           May , 2010 

We gave a little chance for the tiny tots who have just stepped into the arena of classical dance to diversify and learn a small item from outside teachers.  This workshop was conducted by Smt. Bhuvaneshwari Rathnam who trained children on shlokams.  The idea was hugely welcomed by the parents and children and such enthusiasm was a great impetus to us to carry this on further.

 

 

4.  PADAM WORKSHOP  for  JUNIORS  by  Smt. ANNAPOORNA MURALI

 

Held On           :           Mar  26-27, 2010 

Our second juniors Padam workshop, was held in March 2010, by Smt. Annapoorna Murali, a student of Kalakshetra School of Fine Arts , Chennai and currently the Artistic Director of Nrithyopasana Dance Academy. There was an overwhelming response to this workshop and was very successful.

 

5.  THAANDAVAM WORKSHOP  for  SENIORS  by  Smt. MEERA SRIKANTH

 

Held On           :           Feb 5-6, 2010 

Our second senior workshop, was held in February 2010, by our committee member, Smt. Meera Srikanth, disciple of Natyacharya Sri. Aravind and Smt. Vasantha Aravind.  The item is a composition of Sri. Muralidharan and Ace Mridangam Artiste, Sri. DA. Srinivas.  The lyrics and jathis have been taken from the original Thaandavam literature that has been recovered historically.

 

6. FOLK DANCE WORKSHOP  for  JUNIORS  by  SMT. BHUVANESHWARI RATHNAM  and  SMT. CHANDRA SUBRAMANIAM

 

Held On             :           November, 2009 

We had conducted a folk dance workshop, Kavadi Chindu, for the Juniors by our committee members, Smt. Bhuvaneshwari Rathnam and Smt. Chandra Subramaniam.  This was a very different workshop considering the nature of the item taught and the children enjoyed the item very much.

 

7. ABHAI FUN FAIR – Games based on Dance

 

Held On           :           October 2, 2009 

We had a unique event which was the ABHAI FUN FAIR, conducted for children between the age group of 7 and 13yrs.  Here, we organized many games which were all related to dance in more than one way.  Simple games like Puzzles based on Mudras, Matching games based on Hastha Viniyogam and Deva hasthas were conducted on one hand while more complex games like “Act-it-Out – short stories from epic enacted in the form of sancharis” and “Quiz – based on theory and basics of dance” were conducted for the bigger children.

 

 

8.  PADAM WORKSHOP  by  SMT. ANJANA GANESH

 

Held On           :           May 15 – May 16, 2009 

We conducted our first Workshop for students aged above 13 years.  A composition of Madurai Sri. Muralidharan on Lord Ganesha, “Omkara Vadivam Kondu Aadidum Gananathan” was taught to the girls, by one of our committee members, Smt. Anjana Ganesh, a disciple of Sri. M.V. Narasimhachari.  It was a very successful venture and was attended both by senior students and other teachers.

 

9.LECTURE DEMONSTRATION  on  DIFFERENT DANCE STYLES  by  Sri. METHIL DEVIKA

 

Held In :           April, 2008 

We had a novel lecture demonstration by Senior Artiste, Smt. Methil Devika, who was visiting Dubai.  She kindly consented to our request and agreed to speak about the different aspects of three classical dance styles, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam and Bharathanatyam.  In this part of the world, where there the audience is a mix of all cultures, it was truly a rewarding experience to know more about different dance styles.  She was kind enough to perform a piece in Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi for us.

 

10.LECTURE DEMONSTRATION  on  “NRITTA and ADAVUS”  by  Sri. VASANT KIRAN

 

Held On           :           October 10, 2008 

Another lecture demonstration was conducted in October 2008 when Sri. Vasant Kiran from Kalakshetra, visited Dubai.  He kindly consented to our request and on very short notice a lecture demonstration was organized.  He beautifully outlined the variations in Adavus between the different styles and elaborated on some specific nuances and postures which need to be maintained in Bharathanatyam.

 

11.LECTURE DEMONSTRATION on “ABHINAYAM”  by  SMT. GOPIKA VERMA

 

Held On           :           May 7, 2008 

We had the opportunity to listen to a wonderful session on ABHINAYAM by Smt. Gopika Verma, who was in Dubai for her personal show.  It was extremely kind and gracious of her to find time from her schedule for our cause.

 

 

12.  CURTAIN RAISER SHOW

 

Held On           :           May 2, 2008

 

We performed our first CURTAIN RAISER show on May 2, 2008 at the Indian Consulate Auditorium, Dubai.  All the teachers in Dubai, with their students were given a chance to present two items on that day.  The response for the same was overwhelming where more than 50 students participated.

 

 Other Activities

          1. FUN FAIR  (Games based on classical dance)

Fun fair was conducted by Bhawa on 30th OCt 2010 at Yahiya  Residence , Bur Dubai . A very innovative concept was introduced by BHAWA where the participants learnt more about dance through games. Different games pertaining to varied aspects of dance were organized .

 

2.  Makeup and Hair-Do Workshop

 

BHAWA organized a hands-on workshop where dance hair-do and make-up was taught to parents and students.  This was very well received and appreciated by the parents. This was conducted by Mr. Sashi Kottakal.

 

 

3.Paatum- Bharathamum

 

Team MOHANA and BHAWA came together for the very first time in organizing a carnatic Music and Dance Kutcheri by Dr. Bharathy Mahadevan (Associate Professor, Vocal music, Madurai Kamaraj University).  This accompanied a Bharathanatyam Demonstration of "NAVARASA ANUBHAVAM" by the committee members of BHAWA.

 

4.Mohiniyattam 

 

  Team MOHANA and BHAWA once again organized a Mohiniyattam dance recital by Smt. Jyothi Swaminathan, a famous artiste from Kerala.

 

5. WORKSHOPS -   

 

There were 6 workshops conducted in all. 2 each for sub juniors, juniors and seniors. 

 

The sub junior workshop was conducted by Smt. Rekha Ramachandran and Sri.Jatin subramanian, Juniors -  Smt.Prabha Hari and Smt. Padmapriya Prakash, Seniors- Sri. Sashi Kottakal and Sri. Prem Menon.

 

6. Annual Day 

 

The second Annual Day of Bhawa "KALAANKITAM" was celebrated at Karama Center  on 25th June 2011 . It was a lovely and colourful display of talent from different schools of dance . Bhawa was happy to initiate for the very first time in UAE the award " Bhawa Kala Sreshta " to recognise all the individuals who have been a source of inspiration to others in the region and aided the cause of  BHAWA significantly .The first recipient of this award was Smt . Annapoorna Murali a Post Graduate Diploma  from Kalakshethra , Chennai . This was awarded by Sri. K. Kumar, convener of ICWC. Smt. Annapoorna's performance was the highlight of the day .
